Tips, Ties And Tactics Nymph Fly Fishing: Strike Indicator Set Up
Posted by crazy on Tuesday, November 21 @ 13:05:01 PST

Do you have to constantly mend your fly line when using an indicator? It seems to me that if I add enough weight to get the fly down, the indicator gets pulled under the surface halfway through the drift. Any tips would be a great help. Thanks

What are you using for an indicator? In the summer time I usually will use yarn and put gink on it to help keep it floating. The winter time is a different story, the yarn gets frozen and sinks easily. I have tried cork for the winter but recently I have switched over to Baloon indicator. These things work great. They are super sensitive and are bouyant enough to stay a flot when you need to get real deep.

As far as mending goes I like to put a mend in my line as soon as it hits the water. The mend dosent have to be perfect infact sometimes I like my first mend to move my indicator upstream. This allows the line below to get beneath the indicator and allows the weight to start working imediately. I then follow my indicator with my rod tip trying to keep the shortest distance possible (without putting drag on my line) between my rod tip and indicator. Manage your line so you can always set the hook quickly sometimes that means letting line out or taking line in during your drift. For more info on indicator fishing check out flies and fins west. Jason put together a nice video on how to set up.

Crazy:

I guess that the other question is how much weight are you using and how fast is the water you are fishing? I usually use bead-head nymphs size 14 - 20 so they aren't very heavy; but they go down pretty quickly. I have found the two-piece styrofoam twist on indicators come in two sizes (at least from the "O" company). The smaller ones do tend to sink when I use a big old wooly bugger or a conehead wooly bugger in a larger size. I guess that if you are going after big meat with big flies you may need a bigger indicator. The balloon ought to work well as Joey said. Good luck!
