Tips, Ties And Tactics Sea Run Trout Fly Fishing: Change With The Tides
Posted by jeremy on Wednesday, December 06 @ 12:50:30 PST

I have been spending some time fly fishing for trout in the salt water estuaries and rivers. This is a different game, especially the closer to the ocean you get. In Maine the tides are significant and certain rivers fish better at different tides and absolutely fish differently at different tides. I like to fish on the dropping tide. And, when the tide drops here in Maine it happens quickly and the changes are drastic. So, here is a tip for anyone else who tries there luck for the salty

trout. Watch your surroundings and change with the tide. You may find yourself fly fishing in a spot and having good success for 20 minutes or so and then that spots shuts off. Probably because the water is dropping out and the fish that were there 20 minutes ago are now holding somewhere else, so move. Learn a sea run fishery well at all stages of both tides and spend some time investing where the trout will reposition themselves at different points within the tides. And, its not just a high and low tide thing. You could absolutely micro manage the tides to 20 minute intervals and get to know exactly how the dynamics of the river will change with a rising or high tide. Don't forget about full moon tides. Oh yah, one more thing. Many of your typical trout patterns may not work to well because the closer you get to the ocean, the trout feed on some not so common things. So try things like scuds and shrimp and mumichaug looking patterns. Watch how the trout feed. The salt water trout fly fishing is a very strange game and takes some getting used to. But, it is alot of fun.

A very different fishery for sure. It is interesting to see how it all evolves from minute to minute. A place we you caught one fish might be totally void of water in the next half hour. The fish are constanly moving following the water as it changes depths. The flies are a totally different game too. Stuff that you never heard of or used comes out of the box and slays. Not your ordinary trout game at all. I am very new to this type of fly fishing. It is really fun to watch it all transpire right in front of you. I look forward to doing more of it.
