Tips, Ties And Tactics Nymph & Streamer Tactics: A Deadly Combination
Posted by fliesandfinseast on Saturday, December 16 @ 12:29:42 PST

I have been thinking of trying a new technique while nymph fishing and was wondering if anyone has tried it before. In the past I have dead drifted a wooly bugger with a nymph behind it and had good results. Then I got wondering if the opposite would work? I would have my lead fly be a nymph (probably a natural and no bead head) then trailing that I would have a bait fish imitation. Allow the flies to drift down the river

and then swing as usual. This is where I would strip the streamer back in at a moderate pace. This would imitate a smaller fish chasing a nymph and potentially attract a trout to strike the streamer. Since trout are a fairly aggressive fish this could be a deadly technique. I have never seen anyone try it and was wondering if anyone has. If so how are the results?

I've never tried it but I have considered it many times. Here's my theory. Let's say you are fishing with a nymph rig. The indicator, weight followed by 2 nymphs 18 inches apart. Traditionally you would cast this rig up stream and let it drift downstream. A lot of times if you have the right nymphs on this is a very effective way to fish. However sometimes you don't catch fish with this setup. So the reasonable thing to do as a flyfisherman is to change things up a bit. If you had a nymph with a streamer trailing that adds a whole new dimension. As the nymph and streamer drift downstream the nymph would look natural but the streamer would not. when you reach the end of your drift you could strip it back and it would add a lot of potential to your setup. In theory there seems to be an advantage. The consideration seems to be would the streamer drifting downstream spook fish away from hitting the nymph??? I dont know I have'nt tried it yet. YET is the key word. I will try this setup at some point but I prefer to learn from other peoples mistakes so any insight would be appreciated on my end also.

Great topic. I used to fish this setup on the Davidson River in NC. Davidson is well known freestone that is full of hefty brown trout. I used to fish this setup with midge as lead and a large leech as a streamer and would catch fish on both flies. Just letting you know it is possible.

Interesting. I have never heard or though of this method. Sounds like it would produce. Let us know how it works out.
