Tips, Ties And Tactics Leech Patterns: What’s Your Favorite Color
Posted by fliesandfinseast on Tuesday, December 19 @ 08:33:42 PST

Here in Maine the go to leech pattern seems to be Olive whether it is the most natural looking or just attracts the fish I don’t know. I have stripped a Black Wooly Bugger through and area where I could see the fish with not strikes. I then put on the Olive and every cast I would have one on. In NY while Steelhead fishing purple seems to be a hot color for leech patterns. It is interesting why one color my

work and others my not, especially when fishing for similar species of fish. So what is the hot leech pattern for the areas you fish?

My favorite leech patterns are broken into two groups: Still water and rivers. I find my most productive leech pattern on still water is a black egg sucking leech. Why it works so well I don't know, but it produces where others don't. On rivers I find that yellow or olive grizzly leech pattern bring the most strikes.

I am a big fan of purple for steelhead and rust for resident trout here on my local freestones. I think the rusty brown color looks like a sculpin!

olive ... if i had to fish for trout with only one fly and "catching" was the goal .... i would, without question, choose a conehead OLIVE wooly bugger ...

steelhead --- black, purple or olive .. but if i had to choose only one ... i'd still go olive ..

Definately olive for me too. My best big fish leech patterns for steelhead and rainbows would be an articulated olive bunny fly.
