Tips, Ties And Tactics Fly Fishing Eastern Mass: Winter Tactics
Posted by TheMidge on Saturday, December 30 @ 15:45:13 PST

I am new to Massachusetts and live in the Metro west area. Can anyone suggest any streams for winter fly fishing besides the Swift River? I was wondering if anyone has any experience on the Stillwater or Quinapoxet in the winter and what tactic's work well in the winter. I fished both streams a lot this spring and fall, but am looking for a winter location, and the Swift has been pretty crowded so far with the warmer weather this winter. Also, how's the Millers in the winter? Thanks for any help

try the westfield river ... not too far from the swift and some nice trout...... but if you are going to do that .. why not go to the salmon river in ny and fish for steelhead? just a thought ... granted, a bit further .... but worth it ...

also .... try some different sections of the swift ... its a big river .. and it gets crowded up by the Y pool above the rte 9 bridge .. but ther are miles and miles of river below that ... without the people

I have fished the Deerfield and that was okay. You may want to take a look at the Farmington as well. There are some nice wild browns there.

I would echo what waterwhippa said hit the farmington. WHen I lived in western mass 20 minutes from the swift I rarely fished it or the deerfield. We always made the drive to the farmington and never regretted it.
