Tips, Ties And Tactics Landing Someone Else’s Fish: The Stress Of The Net Man
Posted by fliesandfinseast on Monday, January 08 @ 04:04:08 PST

It is great to watch your friend hook up and battle a big fish. You stand there and work with them like a team to make sure the fish doesn’t get away. The stress is now on you, your friend has fought the fish well and it is ready to be landed, don’t mess up. When netting a fish I like to approach it slowly and from behind so I do not spook it. Chances are that the fish will make another when it sees you so get in a position that will allow you land it easily.

Once the fish is close I like to get the net in the water and under the fish coming in from behind its tail. I then net the fish and get the hook out. Many times I have seen people charge into the water after a trout and try to net it right off. This can result in missing the fish and breaking it off. I have also seen people grab the end of the line before netting a fish, this is dangerous especially when using light tippet, one head shake and a big fish will break your line. Any other tips for the stressed out net man?

My only thought is to make sure there is plenty of communication between the two of you. The guy who has hooked the fish has a greater understanding of the fish, how tired it is, how it is reacting and so on. Talking to each other provides an easier and smoother netting.

Communication is a big one as well as having a strap to keep your hand attached to the net!! Although I catch and release my brother keeps what he catches (most of the time) One time he hooked into a nice steelie and I went to net the fish and it slipped from my grasp!! My brother about freaked until I shot my hand down and grabbed the fish right above its gills and pulled it out of the water!!! That was definitely a stressor for me.
