Fishing Seasons: Year Around Vs. Six Months
Posted by fliesandfinseast on Tuesday, January 16 @ 06:45:50 PST
In Maine most of our fly fishing rivers are open from April 1st to then End of October. April is usually a lost month due to high and cold water with things picking up well into the middle of May. October is an amazing month and then they cut you off at the end, at which time you go home and start planning your steelheading trips. Some rivers do stay open year round but don’t offer the best opportunities. Granted you have to take what you can get but, isn’t there a better way to allow fisherman to practice their sport year round?
I realize that closing some of these rivers helps the spawning fish in the fall but, what about the spring spawners? I have also heard that there is too much land to regulate with the amount of Game Wardens and the hunting season occupies all of their time. So why not keep the season open for fly fishing only and catch and release only? Make people by an extended season license and let them get outdoors. Are any of your States Waters open for only half of the year?
