Tips, Ties And Tactics Fly Fishing 2007: New Years Fishalution
Posted by fliesandfinseast on Thursday, January 18 @ 05:01:39 PST

Let’s hear what you have planned for the New Year. Whether it is a certain species of fish you want to catch, a destination or a technique that you would like to try. Each year I like to try and get something different accomplished but it is never with a fly rod. This year my fishalution is to try and fish with more dry flies rather than nymph. I must admit that the nymphs are my go to setup so this year I am going to try and improve my dry fly fishing. How about you?

get better at midge fishing and fishing emergers right below the surface film ... i really don't have any confidence at all fishing super tiny stuff .... and not that much confidence fishing emergers .... and when the midges are working best ... or when the trout are keying in on just emergers ..... i often get perplexed and frustrated ...

so --- bottom line == improve my midge and emerger fly fishing skills

Get out of this computer hell I've been in since November and fish..fish..fish.

More Maine of course. The East Outlet really impressed me. Key plan of attack when I get there this year is to actually try and land some more of the fish I hook. Not sure how but I'll have to figure it out when I'm there.

Also explore and fish a lot more of a water system that is fairly close by and has some of the best wild rainbow fishing in the area.

And I also can't stop thinking about those Albies and Bonito. Definitely have to take a few trips to RI for them.

I have two main objectives for 2007. An Albacore from foot and a summer run steelhead, from the Salmon R. on a skated bomber, with the spey rod.

2 things

1. Catch a 30 inch rainbow on a dry fly- Very hard to do but it has been done with big mouse patterns

2. Improve my spey casting

I live in maine and I want to do more surf casting and catch more (and larger) stripers and blues than last year. I have been tying lots of diferent saltwater patterns this winter and hope to figure out what works when and where. My dad said that he would really like to do more saltwater this year but last year i didnt get enough time in because he didnt have enough time. this is gonna be the year! he said he might even take me on a pike trip:)

My new years resolution is to try and find a decent steelheading spot that not everybody and his brother knows about. Which is tough because I fish mainly the salmon river. I also want to try and best my 35 in steelhead that I caught last year using my 5wt fly rod. I would also like to learn how to better cast my nymph rigs because I can't stand fishing at my feet:(!
