Tips, Ties And Tactics Angler Health: Exersise For The Battle
Posted by joey on Wednesday, February 14 @ 13:03:26 PST

Fly Fishing can be a physically demanding activity. As the seasons go by the bones get a little older and the joints get a little stiffer, When I am not out walking the banks of the river, making casts after cast or wading through strong currents, I try to get a little bit of exersise each day to prepare for the battle. I try and get out side and walk around or go to the gym a few times a week when fishing is not an option. I have found that just a little exersise a few times a week helps my circulation and increases my endurace. This is a big help especially for long days on the water. What are some activities that you do to stay fit for fishing?

Joey:

You might be amazed at how small of an amount of exercise is sufficient to make you feel better, especially when you are a fat old bat like me. (I'm 54 years old and a plump 250 lb at 6' 2") I try to do some exercise at home about 3-4 times per week: 30 crunches, 10 "lying-on-my-stomach" back arches, 20 push-ups, and some calf extensions (30) and thigh work (30 X stair climb - 2 stairs with one step) on the steps to my basement. It takes about 20 minutes while I watch the news in the morning. It may require more exercise for a young stud like you, Joey, since you are probably in better shape with no workout than I can hope for with lots of work.

Oh, I forgot... my thumb gets a pretty good workout every day from all the use of my TV remote control. (You know, I can remember a time, before most of you guys were born, when we had to get up from the sofa to change the channel or the volume. Sometimes we even had to stand by the TV for a while to adjust the horizontal hold! Can you believe that!)

But seriously, my execise routine has done a lot to improve my lower back ache. I feel quite a bit better with this little workout than when I don't do the exercise (like on the weekends!) - but I still have lower back issues when standing and casting all day long. And my shoulder may need some work after a summer of hurling clousers at non-existant stripers. At this point, I hope to survive my atherosclerosis long enough to retire and get in some real fishing time!

Dave

It is funny you should mention that. I just started woking out again in preparation for my upcoming trips. Not only does being out of shape effect you abilities but, like you say, it also keeps you in the game longer. It has been cold and crappy out here latelty so I have started doing the 20 minute stair run in my house and working out with weights. I can't stand the gym.
