Fly Shops: What Makes Them Great?
Posted by clip on Wednesday, February 28 @ 06:27:35 PST
To those who have fished far and wide what makes a great fly shop? I have been in and out of many and it seems that each has its own atmosphere. Some are old and others more recent, but there is something that makes a fly fisherman feel at home in a nice fly shop. What are your favorite attributes?

Everybody there has the same thing in mind and all conversations are about fishing. I like looking at the new gear and the large fly selections. Looking up at the report board to see how each drainage is fishing. In my mind (for some reason) a nice fly shop always has wood floors and an outdoorsy feel. |

Being able to talk with the owner or employees who have some local knowledge is great too. It's always fun to get to know other flyfishers. I'd have to say that the atmosphere in the shop or the attitude of the owner bleeds through and can make you feel at home. It can turn you off just as easy. That is what is most important to me. I will go out of my way to avoid shops that I don't like and go to ones I do. |

Visting a new fishing location can be intimidating, and a local shop owner can have just the right information to help you in your river quest. I too will go out of my way to shop at a fly shop with a friendly and informative owner. I've always avoided purchasing my gear from the big box mart retailers like Cabelas and Bass Pro when I can help it. When I have to order a new pair of waders or a new rod, I call the fly shop that made my last trip a success, even if it means I'll pay a few extra bucks to get what I need. |
