Tips, Ties And Tactics Fly Fishing Vests: Fishpond vs. Simm G3
Posted by keith on Wednesday, March 07 @ 13:13:35 PST

I have been looking at options for a new vest and am having a hard time choosing one. I'm considering a Fishpond vest/pack or the Simms G3 Guide vest. Both look killer, but each has its advantages. I thought I would post the question and see if there are folks out there that have anything to say good or bad about either option. Thanks for the info.

keith-

I owned a fishpond vest and a fishpond chestpack. I must say that I am partial to the chest/back pack combo. It comes with a hydration bladder that is great for long days on the water and chest pack has enough room for all your fly fishing gear (leaders, fly boxs....etc.). I have found the vests that I have owned become very bulky in the front and tend to droop down becasue there is nothing to counter the weight in back of you. Hope this helps you out, I would reccomend trying each of the items on (if you are not ordering it) and see which is better for you. But for me its the chest/backpack combo. Good luck.

If I had to choose from just those two I would go with the fishpond, the quality is great and they cost less. Another one that I like is from Mothertech.

I have the G3 and Im not compleatly in love with it. The lower front pockets are horazontaly posistioned on the vest. If you put a big steelhead box in each pocket you will be hitting your elbows on them all day. Not that it hurts but it get annoying. If I could go back in time I would get the vertical master by simms. Just like theG3 but the pockets are vertical. Other than that 1 complaint the vest rocks. You will love it.
I always thought those fishpond things looked a little too high tech or something.
