Posted by joey on Wednesday, March 28 @ 15:38:25 PDT

Every fisherman talks about there personal best and will gladly share thier story when the moment arrives. It is a wonderful memory that each of us holds and will often day dream back to that special mement when the big one was finally tricked. Here is your chance to let us all know what your person best is. Why don't we do do it in categories, fresh water trout/salmon, steelhead, salt water (cold), salt water (warm). If you do not have a fish for that category fill in what your goal would be.

fresh water - i remember how when i first was introduced to steelhead how amazed i was by there size and how hard they were for me to catch. numerous trips to the great lakes produced zippo for me. i was mind boggled as to why i could not find them and why i could not catch them. all of my trout fishing experience was really not a help at all and the steelhead seemed to laugh at my trout like offerings. it took me a long time to dial into these fish and alot of watching in amazement as some very good steelhead fishermen seemed to find and catch steelhead in big water, slow water, fast water and tiny creeks. then one day, my time had come. i hooked my first shiny steelhead and landed it. it was not the biggest i have ever caught in terms of pounds or inches .. but it was the biggest in my mind...and still is to this very day.

saltwater - to date, a bluefin tuna on the fly was my most memorable fly fishing experience. the bluefin tuna is the fastest fish in the ocean .. highly saught after for both the price on its head (45 dollars per pound) and its elusive sportfish nature. their history and migration patterns and nomadic existance make them a fish that all fisherman throughout history have been attracted to. so, when i hooked and landed my first bluefin tuna on the fly last season, it was an experience that i will never forget and a fish that i am very proud to say that i caught ... and released.

My Biggest Steelhead came last fall on the salmon river in NY. I remember all the steelhead that I have caught like yesterday but the one landed and released last Ocober was teh biggest. It was a 35" male that feel for the egg sucking leech.

I nearly boated a 50-60 lb tarpon a couple years ago but it broke off at the boat. What a rush that was. I have never witnessed and fish as powerful as a tarpon in shallow water. What a great fish. Hopefully many more to come.

Two fish come to mind in the freshwater salmon/trout category. On the salmon side the largest fish I have landed was a 55 pound King on the Talachultna river. I believe I wrote about it in my fist fish tale, I remember it in vivid detail. i casted to a school out of the boat, the school was so big I didn't really notice any large fish in there. Soon enough i saw a very large back about 10 feet down chasing my 6 inch black articulated leech and everthing went into slow motion. He followed till the point that I couldn't strip anymore, the fish was right under the boat so i just let the fly sink and saw the fish open and inhale. I paused set the hook and it was on. 100 yards of the reel in an instant and one hell of a long fight.

On the trout side my largest was a 35"x 21.5 inch fish last year on the Naknek. Thing fough just as hard as that 55 pound king even thoug he weight 35 pounds less. I was in awe of that fish many people dream of steelhead that big so a rainbow is quite amazing.

My largest steelhead was only about 12 pounds, I really am just starting the steelhead obsession so that mark shall improve.

I am with Joey on the saltwater end....not many species can compare to shallow water Tarpon on the fly...never boated one but jumped a few beauties. Very strong and angry fish. Freshwater was two winters ago, Big, bright steelhead from the lower Salmon river...never put the tape to it but it had to be 20 pounds if it was an ounce. Big shout out to Joey and Jeremy for helping me land the dinosaur...The fish of a lifetime for certain...thanks again guys.

Freshwater on a fly would have to be last spring when I landed a 35 inch 17-18 pound steelhead on my 5wt. It ruined my rod but was well worth it!!
Saltwater would have to be a five foot reef shark when I lived on Maui back in 95 or 96. Thing fought like a champ and scared about every swimmer out of the water!!
