Fly Fishing New York: Rivers On The Canadian Border
Posted by evan on Friday, April 13 @ 05:34:06 PDT
I'm living in Ottawa and am looking for a river which is good for trout or salmon/steelhead in the upper NY state area preferibly close to the border. I am also wondering what fishing permits cost and does a person require a guiding service or not?

The upper section that goes through Watertown the steelhead can't make it up but there are some stocked browns and some rainbows. It is also pretty crazy to wade at spots and that's why they run the whitewater rafts through there. If you have access to a boat the St. Lawrence is a good bet...the black river outside of Lowville is a fly fishermans paradise if you want some browns and the Salmon river up by Malone has a bunch of Rainbows, wild brook trout and browns. It would be worth a little extra drive to hook up with waterwhippa down in the Pulaski area of the salmon river as he could get you into some monster fish! Goodluck |
