Tips, Ties And Tactics Fly Fishing Streamers: Downstream Presentations
Posted by AvidDavid on Sunday, June 03 @ 18:13:00 PDT

I have read, on several occasions, that baitfish flee downstream and that phenomenal hits from huge fish can be obtained by making streamers swim downstream. I tried this the other day, with no luck.... But, I'll be the dummy and ask a question. How do you do this?

If you cast directly upstream, it is really difficult to strip the line in fast enough to maintain "contact" with the streamer to detect a hit.

Do you cast across the current and let the bulge in your line draw the streamer downstream on the other side of the bulge? This seems to accomplish the downstream streamer retrieve with a chance of accomplishing a hook set.

I know that MarshallD is a big proponent for this, and I assume that, as a guy from Maine, he knows his way around a streamer. But I also know that Marsh is a real site-fishing afficianado, so perhaps he is detecting his hits visually!

Just thought I would ask a stupid question and hope for a kind soul to help teach an old dog a new trick with some great advice on this intriguing technique.

Not a stupid question, AD. "Do you cast across the current and let the bulge in your line draw the streamer downstream on the other side of the bulge?"

Yes. I try to use a sinking tip, weighted fly, and to cover as much water as possible. Cast upstream and let the belly of line preceed the fly downstream. Then, strip qick, jerky strips and let the fly finally swing straight and leave it! Often a fish will follow the fly and strike when the fly turns and straightens. The keys are covering water, sinking the fly and always keeping your rod pointed down at the surface of the water.

check out DAVE whitlock and some of his technigues on fishing this way.. I too employ the downstream method and as marshall says the hits can be devastating....I use a sink tip and a heavy weighted sculpin pattern such as whitlocks "near enuff" this fly has a weighted head and i allow it to bounce on the bottom........i usually use this method along deep banks that hold large browns...... they will virtually attack the fly....keep rod tip down jerk strips with pauses......
