Tips, Ties And Tactics Klinkhammer Flies: The Dry Fly That Does It All
Posted by fliesandfinseast on Friday, June 22 @ 08:23:02 PDT

For the past few nights I have been going to a local pond that is full of big browns and Rainbows. Just before dark a small hatch comes off that is difficult to determine. I think they are small caddis flies but am not too sure. I started of nymphing to the rising fish and had some success but not the action I was looking for. Just as the sun dissapeared I opend my dry fly box and tied on a rust colored Klinkhammer. I made a short cast to a rising fish and the game was on. A nice bow came to hand after a good battle.

The Klinkhammer is a fly that is designed so the body hangs below the surface and looks like an emerging bug getting ready to reach the surface. The fish were going crazy for this fly and they were eating it a couple different ways. The first night trying the fly I was casting it to a rising fish and letting it float with no movement. Slowly a riser would come up and sip it off the surface. Last night it was windy and I hade trouble seeing the fly on hte surface, so Iwas slowly stripping it. A big brown tore line from my hands and was another victim of the Klinkhammer. When things are tough throw one of these flies on your line you'll be suprised.

you were right ... i am sold on this pattern and other simlar flies called "parasols" .. specifically "parasol midge" for those times they are on the super small stuff .... anyway, i tried this based on your recommendation here ... and it worked ... and for the first time i felt reasonably confident fishing those sometimes annyoing and frustrating times when the trout are eating emergers and emergers only .... thanks joey ..
