Emerging Flies: Effective Types Of Presentations
Posted by fliesandfinseast on Saturday, July 07 @ 15:07:45 PDT
Fly fishing with emerger patterns is an effective way to trick trout feeding under the surface. There are a couple ways that I like to fish these flies. One, is to tie on a tandem fly rig and swing them in quicker moving water (for more info see flies and fins east article on Swingning Soft Hackles). The other way I fish emerging patters is much like nymhing. It too is a tandem fly rig, with an emerger as the first fly and a weighted nymph below.
To set this up you must attatch 8 - 12 inches of tippet to your leader with an overhand knot. Leave the tag ends, for you will be attaching the emerger one of them. Tie your weighted nymph to the tippet you attached and trim off the shorter tag end. With the other tag end attatch your emerger. Essentially your line will look like an upside down "L" when traveling through the water. This techniques allows you to present both a nymph on the bottom and a fly emerging. Give it a try next time on the water.
