Tips, Ties And Tactics Striped Bass: Tandem Fly Techniques
Posted by fliesandfinseast on Tuesday, July 17 @ 15:15:36 PDT

I have been reading about multiple flie rigs used when fly fishing for stripers. I was wondering if any of you have tried this technique and how effective it is. From what I can tell the set-up looks like 2 and upwards of 4 flies on one leader. I suppose that this would resemble many baitfish swimming together. Any info?

Different thought but... I agreed to try it out at the end of last season and I haven't gotten out yet. This summer has been a killer. My thoughts were to use 2 or more different flies kind of like trout guys use a big attractor and a dropper. I actually did it with two complete leaders: one with a crease fly and the other with a clouser - but I caught nothing. This gives you the chance to try two different flies at once to more quickly narrow down what might work. What do you think?

i did it last year, kind of as a joke really ... when fishing with a friend an surrounded by thousands of schoolies .... we simply tied a smaller clouser off the hook of a leading bigger clouser ... we often caught and landed 2 at a time as long as the first fly that was taken was the lead fly .... it was alot of fun given the fact that we were on a flat and knew that we were just fishing to schoolies .... but, if i were really targeting bigger fish via sight fishing or something like that ... i don't think it would be all that effective or easy to trick the bigger fish .... and 2 big fish on at once with an 8 weight could be kinda silly anyway ... however, i could see running a clouser with some sort of deciever dropper off it .. that might make a nice effect of a bigger baitfish chasing a smaller baitfish .. hmmm .. might try it ...
