Tips, Ties And Tactics Spey Rod: Hookset Techniques
Posted by luke on Thursday, August 23 @ 15:17:14 PDT

i am new to fly fishinhg with a Spey Rod and was wondering about the hookset. I have heard that the stikes are vicious an it feels like the fish will pull the rod our of your hands. Do you have to set the hook like you would when nymphing or swinging streamers? Or does the fish generally hook itself. I hope to do more spey fishing this fall for Steelhead. Any info would be great.

Luke,

Steelhead will hook themselves....all you have to do is raise the rod. Remember to keep the tip of the rod below your nose when playing them. Keep the rod paralell to the water.

Fishing with a spey rod is much better suited to swinging leeches. You can nymph with them but to me it's not practical and it's better to nymph with a single hand rod.

Steelhead and big trout generally hook themselves on swinging flies. As said earlier just raise your rod gently and hold on.

Two things to watch out for is when you raise your rod raise it it upward. Never pull it upstream close to the water as you are pulling the fly directly out of the fish's mouth.

Also steelhead and trout especially in bigger water will follow a swinging fly a long way and many times will tap the fly several times, be patient and wait till the fish really slams it.
