Nymphing Deep Runs: Hinged Leaders Accel Sinking Rate
Posted by fliesandfinseast on Monday, September 17 @ 08:02:53 PDT
I have found that tapered leaders have a difficult time sinking (even fluro) when I am nymph fishing. I have come to learn that making a hinged leader will get my flies down quicker and result in more hookups. This is how it works. Start the head of your leader with 3 feet of 2-3x. Then attach a 1-2feet of 0x. From here taper it down to 5x and run your tippet from there. That section of heavier line (0x) accels the sink rate of the line. With tappered leaders it gradually gets thiner so the weight of the line is less.
This set up is useful when nymphing for all trout species especially steelhead that hold tight to the bottom.
