Tips, Ties And Tactics Steelhead Fly Patterns: Go To Fly For The Fall Run

The time has come to get ready. Break out the vise and start replacing all the flies that got left in fish mouths or stuck in the river. What will be your go to pattern this fall? I have been tying Glo Bugs like mad, because they work, end of story. But, I got tired of doing the same thing so I put a twist on it. I put are green caddis looking body on my flies to make them look a bit more tasty. Who knows they might just work. I have been calling it the egg sucking caddis. Tell me your creations.

i like the egg sucking caddis joey .. sounds cool ... i think i am going to experiment with some cluster egg ties this fall ... but, just like you .. i don't know how long i will be able to last before reverting back to the straight up glo bug (whippa's version) ... like you said, they work . period.

I guess you could call my version of the egg sucking leech my go to fly. It never fails to catch me a fish but it also doesn't look like any egg sucking leech that I have ever seen. Oh well, it works. I need to brush up on my tying....my flies are looking horrible. Maybe that's the trick...make them ugly and they will bite!

My hot fly so far this year with the low/clear water on the Erie tribs is a little caddis pattern I "made up". I use hot green floss for a body and a peacock herl collar. Like size 14 or 16 works real well.

Glo bugs are my go to fly for fall steelhead too.

However gormanz bead head eggs work just as well for me and can save the day when glo bugs are not doing well. Plus the extra weight of a bead especially a tugsten one keeps the fly in the zone without much shot or no shot at all.

i also tie lots of leeches as not much is more exiting that feeling a steelhead slam your fly on the swing. After all all the saying is the tug is the drug, not the indicator going down is the drug!
