Tips, Ties And Tactics Steelhead Stinger Flies: How To Tie
Posted by fliesandfinseast on Saturday, November 24 @ 16:04:01 PST

I am planning a Steelhead trip with a guide in the Northwest. Egg patterns as well as string leeches are the main patterns used to trick these ocean run fish. I was wondering how to tie stinger patterns for Steelies. Bright patterns as well as darks are the colors used. I would like to tie some of these patterns before I go. Any advice would help.

Hi, I have been tying a lot of atlantic salmon flies and one of the things I've discovered whil searching online is that some of these western steelhead patterns are similar. A lot of them are brighter and more bushy mostly they are pretty colorful. If you google steelhead flies and vary that you will find a ton of patterns. The older featherwing patterns are a pain in the ***. Many of the patterns now have a hairwing variant that is just as effective and takes a lot less time to tie. I am planning on trying many of these out in the great lakes. Particularly the ones weighted with lead eyes.
